EPHESIANS 1:1-14

From Paul, one of King Jesus’s apostles through God’s purpose, to the holy ones in Ephesus who are also loyal believers in King Jesus: 2 may God our father and the Lord Jesus, the king, give you grace and peace! 3 Let us bless God, the father of our Lord Jesus, the king! He has blessed us in the king with every spirit-inspired blessing in the heavenly realm. 4 He chose us in him before the world was made, so as to be holy and irreproachable before him in love. 5 He foreordained us for himself, to be adopted as sons and daughters through Jesus the king. We were foreordained to this, according to the intention of the one who does all things in accordance with the counsel of his purpose.           12 This was so that we, we who first hoped in the king, might live for the praise of his glory.         13 In him you too, who heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed it — in him you were marked out with the spirit of promise, the Holy One.  14 The spirit is the guarantee of our inheritance, until the time when the people who are God’s special possession are finally reclaimed and freed. This, too, is for the praise of his glory.

DON’T GIVE UP

GALATIANS 6:9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

TRUST GOD FOR TOMORROW

 

2 Corinthians 8:10-14 (MSG)  So here’s what I think: The best thing you can do right now is to finish what you started last year and not let those good intentions grow stale.  Your heart’s been in the right place all along. You’ve got what it takes to finish it up, so go to it.  Once the commitment is clear, you do what you can, not what you can’t.  The heart regulates the hands.  This isn’t so others can take it easy while you sweat it out.  No, you’re shoulder to shoulder with them all the way, your surplus matching their deficit, their surplus matching your deficit.  In the end you come out even.

Philippians 3:13-14  Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.  But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press toward the goal…

WHAT'S IN A NAME? III

EZRA 3:1, 3-4, 10-13 When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns, the people assembled together as one in Jerusalem. 3 Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the Lord, both the morning and evening sacrifices.  4 Then in accordance with what is written, they celebrated the Festival of Tabernacles with the required number of burnt offerings prescribed for each day.

34-35 Jesus said, “When you’re celebrating a wedding, you don’t skimp on the cake and wine. You feast. Later you may need to pull in your belt, but this isn’t the time. As long as the bride and groom are with you, you have a good time. When the groom is gone, the fasting can begin. No one throws cold water on a friendly bonfire. This is Kingdom Come!

6 As for human praise, we have never sought it from you or anyone else.

7 As apostles of Christ we certainly had a right to make some demands of you, but instead we were like children among you. Or we were like a mother feeding and caring for her own children. 

8 We loved you so much that we shared with you not only God’s Good News but our own lives, too.

9 Don’t you remember, dear brothers and sisters, how hard we worked among you? Night and day we toiled to earn a living so that we would not be a burden to any of you as we preached God’s Good News to you. 

10 You yourselves are our witnesses—and so is God—that we were devout and honest and faultless toward all of you believers. 

11 And you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children. 

12 We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory.

FATHERHOOD IS HARD WORK

INDISPENSABLE AND INTERDEPENDENT

1 Corinthians 12:12-27  The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body.  So it is with the body of Christ.  13) Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free.  But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

14) Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part.  15) If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. 16) And if the ear says,   “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body?  17) If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear?  Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?

18) But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it.  19) How strange a body would be if it had only one part!  20) Yes, there are many parts, but only one body.  21) The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.”  The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”

22) In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary.  23) And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen,  24) while the more honorable parts do not require this special care.  So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity.  25) This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other.  26) If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.

27) All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. 

 

1. Faithfulness and Dependability

   We expect faithfulness and dependability.  

2. Special and Vital

Jesus reached out to people who - by societies standards - were losers and made them winners.

In a fragmented and hurting world the Church can provide what     no other can. 

3. Indispensable and Interdependent

So, each member is indispensable and is interdependent.

4. Significant and Interconnected

Nobody is a Nobody in the Body of Christ.

5. Directed and Gifted

We all have a part to play, and no part is insignificant.

To refuse or neglect to do our part hurts the entire body.

We might not think we need the body - but certainly the body needs us.

MARK 4:35-41 35-38 Late that day he said to them, “Let’s go across to the other side.” They took him in the boat as he was. Other boats came along. A huge storm came up. Waves poured into the boat, threatening to sink it. And Jesus was in the stern, head on a pillow, sleeping! They roused him, saying, “Teacher, is it nothing to you that we’re going down?”

39-40 Awake now, he told the wind to pipe down and said to the sea, “Quiet! Settle down!” The wind ran out of breath; the sea became smooth as glass. Jesus reprimanded the disciples: “Why are you such cowards? Don’t you have any faith at all?”

41 They were in absolute awe, staggered. “Who is this, anyway?” they asked. “Wind and sea at his beck and call!”

MARK 6:45-51 45-46 As soon as the meal was finished, Jesus insisted that the disciples get in the boat and go on ahead across to Bethsaida while he dismissed the congregation. After sending them off, he climbed a mountain to pray.

47-49 Late at night, the boat was far out at sea; Jesus was still by himself on land. He could see his men struggling with the oars, the wind having come up against them. At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them, walking on the sea. He intended to go right by them. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and screamed, scared out of their wits.

50-52 Jesus was quick to comfort them: “Courage! It’s me. Don’t be afraid.” As soon as he climbed into the boat, the wind died down. They were stunned, shaking their heads, wondering what was going on. They didn’t understand what he had done at the supper. None of this had yet penetrated their hearts.

MARK 8:11-21 11-12 When they arrived, the Pharisees came out and started in on him, badgering him to prove himself, pushing him up against the wall. Provoked, he said, “Why does this generation clamor for miraculous guarantees? If I have anything to say about it, you’ll not get so much as a hint of a guarantee.”

13-15 He then left them, got back in the boat, and headed for the other side. But the disciples forgot to pack a lunch. Except for a single loaf of bread, there wasn’t a crumb in the boat. Jesus warned, “Be very careful. Keep a sharp eye out for the contaminating yeast of Pharisees and the followers of Herod.”

16-19 Meanwhile, the disciples were finding fault with each other because they had forgotten to bring bread. Jesus overheard and said, “Why are you fussing because you forgot bread? Don’t you see the point of all this? Don’t you get it at all? Remember the five loaves I broke for the five thousand? How many baskets of leftovers did you pick up?” They said, “Twelve.”

20 “And the seven loaves for the four thousand—how many bags full of leftovers did you get?”

“Seven.”

21 He said, “Do you still not get it?”

12-14 It so happened that as she continued in prayer before God, Eli was watching her closely. Hannah was praying in her heart, silently. Her lips moved, but no sound was heard. I. Hannah made a vow to God

II.  Hannah gave her son to God to serve God. 

1 SAMUEL 1:24 Then she took him up to Shiloh, bringing also the makings of a generous sacrificial meal—a prize bull, flour, and wine. The child was so young to be sent off! 25-26 They first butchered the bull, then brought the child to Eli.

III.  Hannah gave her son to worship God.

1:27 Hannah said, “Excuse me, sir. Would you believe that I’m the very woman who was standing before you at this very spot, praying to God? I prayed for this child, and God gave me what I asked for. And now I have dedicated him to God. He’s dedicated to God for life.”  Then and there, they worshiped God.

IV.  Hannah gave herself to God.

2:1-2 Hannah prayed: “I’m bursting with God-news! I’m walking on air.  I’m laughing at my rivals. I’m dancing my salvation.2-5 Nothing and no one is holy like God, no rock mountain like our God.”

How can you be a mother who trusts God with her children?

How can you make a commitment to lead your children to serve God?

How can you be a model and example to your children of a life spent worshipping God?

Your relationship with God through Christ fuels your trust, commitment, and life.

THE FLIP SIDE OF FEAR AND FAITH

MATTHEW 14:22-36

22-23 As soon as the meal was finished, he insisted that the disciples get in the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he dismissed the people. With the crowd dispersed, he climbed the mountain so he could be by himself and pray. He stayed there alone, late into the night.

24-26 Meanwhile, the boat was far out to sea when the wind came up against them and they were battered by the waves. At about four o’clock in the morning, Jesus came toward them walking on the water. They were scared out of their wits. “A ghost!” they said, crying out in terror.

27 But Jesus was quick to comfort them. “Courage, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.”

28 Peter, suddenly bold, said, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.”

29-30 He said, “Come ahead.”

Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus. But when he looked down at the waves churning beneath his feet, he lost his nerve and started to sink. He cried, “Master, save me!”

31 Jesus didn’t hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his hand. Then he said, “Faint-heart, what got into you?”

32-33 The two of them climbed into the boat, and the wind died down. The disciples in the boat, having watched the whole thing, worshiped Jesus, saying, “This is it! You are God’s Son for sure!”

34-36 On return, they beached the boat at Gennesaret. When the people got wind that he was back, they sent out word through the neighborhood and rounded up all the sick, who asked for permission to touch the edge of his coat. And whoever touched him was healed.

FEAR IS ONLY NATURAL

GETTING PAST THE PAST

2 Samuel 9:1-8; 13  One day David asked, “Is anyone in Saul’s family still alive - anyone to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”  2) He summoned a man named Ziba, who had been one of Saul’s servants. “Are you Ziba?” the king asked.  “Yes sir, I am,” Ziba replied.  3) The king then asked him, “Is anyone still alive from Saul’s family?  If so, I want to show God’s kindness to them.”  Ziba replied, “Yes, one of Jonathan’s sons is still alive.  He is crippled in both feet.”

4) “Where is he?” the king asked.  “In Lo-debar,” Ziba told him, “at the home of Makir son of Ammiel.”  5) So David sent for him and brought him from Makir’s home.  6) His name was Mephibosheth; he was Jonathan’s son and Saul’s grandson.  When he came to David, he bowed low to the ground in deep respect.  David said, “Greetings, Mephibosheth.”  Mephibosheth replied, “I am your servant.”

7) “Don’t be afraid!” David said. “I intend to show kindness to you because of my promise to your father, Jonathan.  I will give you all the property that once belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will eat here with me at the king’s table!”  8) Mephibosheth bowed respectfully and exclaimed, “Who is your servant, that you should show such kindness to a dead dog like me?”

13) And Mephibosheth, who was crippled in both feet, lived in Jerusalem and ate regularly at the king’s table.

Don’t let the pain of your past hinder you from pressing on in life. 

How do we get past the pain?

Forgive those who hurt you and forgive yourself

The only reason we still deal with the pain is because we keep holding on to it  

When we learn to forgive – we can move forward into our promised blessings

Philippians 3:13 One thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead

As long as you keep holding on to the past hurt - your past will keep holding on to you

Where you are now is not where you have to stay.

I CORINTHIANS 13:1-8; 13 If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. 3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.8 Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! 

13 Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

    — Our first goal in a conversation is to understand one another.

    — My thoughts, feelings, and needs are valuable and important, and so are yours.

    — I do not participate in disrespectful conversations. When my thoughts, feelings, and needs are devalued in a conversation, I will stop the conversation and set a clear boundary. Until respect is restored, I will not participate.

    — We need to communicate our true feelings and needs to establish trust and intimacy.

     — It’s my job to tell you what is going on inside me, and your job to tell me what’s going on inside you. We do not have powers of telepathy or the right to assume we know one another’s motives, thoughts, feelings, or needs.

    — Our first goal in a conversation is to understand one another.

    — The best way to communicate my feelings and needs to you is to use “I messages” and clear, specific statements that show what I am feeling and experiencing.

DEATH TO LIFE

JOHN 5:19-24 So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. 

20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished. 

21 For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants. 

22 In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge, 

23 so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.

24 “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.

14 So then, we must cling in faith to all we know to be true. For we have a magnificent King-Priest, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who rose into the heavenly realm for us, and now sympathizes with us in our frailty. 

15 He understands humanity, for as a Man, our magnificent King-Priest was tempted in every way just as we are, and conquered sin. 

16 So now we come freely and boldly to where love is enthroned, to receive mercy’s kiss and discover the grace we urgently need to strengthen us in our time of weakness.
