The Holy Spirit - Who Is He?

The Holy Spirit - Who Is He?
John 14:26 25-27 “I’m telling you these things while I’m still living with you. The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you. I’m leaving you well and whole. That’s my parting gift to you. Peace. I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left—feeling abandoned, bereft. So don’t be upset. Don’t be distraught.
The Early Church
Looked to, Interacted with, Depended on, Spoke of
The Holy Spirit
A Vital Part of their Lives
Involved in Everything that They Did
Preeminent in Ministry Outreach, Team Gatherings, Strategy Meetings
Involved in All Their Activities

A Pattern of Behavior
the Holy Spirit was an IMPORTANT part of Their Daily Lives
Acts 5:32 The Holy Spirit is a Witness
Acts 11:12 “The Holy Spirit told them…”
Acts 11:28 “showed by the Holy Spirit”
Acts 13:4 “sent out by the Holy Spirit”
Acts 15:28 “it seemed good to the Holy Spirit”
Acts 16:6 “forbidden by the Holy Spirit”
Acts 18:5 “ Paul was compelled by the Spirit”
Acts 19:5 “receive the Holy Spirit”
Acts 20:23 “The Holy Spirit tells me”

the Holy Spirit = LIFE
There is Virtually NO Christian Life without the Holy Spirit
Without the Holy Spirit
Christianity is Dry and Mundane, Our Labor is Draining, There is No Fellowship with God
Remove the Holy Spirit from a Church, It will Morph into a Social Club
A Religious Institution

There’s no Revelation of Scripture without the Holy Spirit
I2 Corinthians 3:6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
There’s no vision without the Holy Spirit, No Joy, No Peace, No Freedom
Romans 14:17 For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:17 The Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Everywhere at All Times
Psalm 139:7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?

Psalm 139:8-10 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.                                                                    9 If I ride the wings of the morning ,if I dwell by the farthest oceans,                                              10 even there your hand will guide me,and your strength will support me.

The Big Question
If His Spirit is Everywhere, Is There Freedom Everywhere?

2 Corinthians 3:17 The Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

Lord in 2 Corinthians 3:17 is kyrios = “Supreme in Authority”
The Answer: Where He is WELCOMED as Supreme in Authority, THAT is Where You will Find Freedom

The Big Idea
To Introduce You to the Person of the Holy Spirit
Want to Reveal or ReIntroduce Him and His Purposes in Our Lives

Do We Believe He is an INFLUENCE Proceeding from God?

Galatians 5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
I Want More of the Spirit VS. How Can I Give Myself MORE to Him?

Not “IT” but “HIM”
The Spirit of God WILL NOT Be Manifest where He is Not Honored
Matthew 13:54-58
He is Not A Human
He is a Person
He is Deity
As Humans, WE were Created in HIS Image
And He Desires to Be Our Closest Friend

He has a mind (Romans 8:27).

• He has emotions, such as love and joy (Romans 15:30; Galatians 5:22).
• He comforts (Acts 9:31).
• He speaks (Hebrews 3:7); in fact, He speaks clearly (1 Timothy 4:1).
• He teaches (1 Corinthians 2:13).
• He can be made to feel sorrow (Ephesians 4:30).
• He can be insulted (Hebrews 10:29).
• He can be resisted (Acts 7:51).
• He can be lied to (Acts 5:1-11).
He’s Not a Dove
He Descended on Jesus LIKE A DOVE (Matt 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22, John 1:32)

He Is Not Flames
Revelation 4:5 He is Represented as “Seven Lamps of Fire”
But Jesus in the Same Chapter is Represented as “A Slain Lamb”

Who is He?
He is the Third Person of the Godhead
Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let US make man in our own image.”

The Father, Son and Holy Spirit all Serve Different Roles
The Father Initiates
The Son Administrates
The Spirit Manifests
But They All Work for the Same Purpose

the Holy Sprit is Described as
The Finger of God
Hand of God
Arm of God

Jesus Needed Him
John 5:19 “The Son can do nothing by Himself”

John 14:15-17 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

Two Greek Words for Another
One means A Different Sort
The other means The Same Kind
Jesus was a Teacher, a Helper, the Way, Truth and the Life
He said He would Send “Another Helper” or  “the Same Kind”

Jesus Doesn’t Live in Your Heart
Mark 16:19 When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God's right hand.
But He Sent ‘ANOTHER’ Helper - The Holy Spirit
Helper in Context means
Our Counsel (Lawyer)
Our Counselor
Our Coach

Proverbs 18:24 prophesies of Him “There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

The Truth
John 16:7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
It Was Better for Him to Leave, So We Could Have the Helper

The Good News
The Holy Spirit is ALWAYS There for Us
Any time of Day
As Much Time as We Need Him
As Much Time as We are WILLING to Give Him
And the Holy Spirit is Just Like Jesus
He Teaches Like Jesus
He Speaks the Words of God like Jesus
and He Is Here With Us!

I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever - The Spirit of Truth - John 14:16-17 Amp
