Freedom: The Struggle is Real Lesson 2

Freedom: The Struggle is Real                              Lesson 2

Corinthians 5:17 tells us: “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

Am I Really New?

  • What do we do with
    • Always (2 Corinthians 2:14 always leads us into triumph)
    • More Than (Romans 8:37 more than conquerors)
    • Yes and Amen (2 Corinthians 1:20 All of the promises of God in Him are yes and amen)
  • How Do We Reconcile God’s Promises with Reality?

They Mean Well

  • “You’ll be okay. You just need to grow and mature as a Christian.”
  • “You just need to get your mind renewed.”
  • “You just need the baptism of the Holy Spirit.”
  • “You just need more faith.”
  • “You need to deny self.” Or “You ought to crucify your flesh.”
  • “If you really wanted to change, you could.”
  • “If you really want to stop doing that, why don’t you? You have free will.”
  • “Well, then, you must not really be saved…”

The Cold Hard Truth

  • “The promises and assertions of Scripture don’t automatically manifest for us when we come to Christ.”
    • “Freedom isn’t an instant or automatic reality just because we’re saved”

I Timothy 6:12 “fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called”

  • “what God has already given to us in our spirit, we can fail to experience in our minds, emotions, and bodies.”
  • What God has Given Us in Our Spirit, We Can Fail to Experience in our
    • Minds
    • Emotions
    • Bodies

Three Keys to Freedom

  • Know Yourself
  • Know Your Enemy
  • Know Your God

Who Are You?

“fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14)

“made in His own image” (Genesis 1:27)

“spirit, soul, and body” (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

  • “The Spirit is the Part of our Being that is Godlike
    • Made in His Likeness
      • Comparable To
      • Resemble
    • Thru our Spirit we Connect and Relate to Him;
      • not only Him but also the entire spiritual realm.
      • Our Spirit Houses our Conscience and Intuition

Proverbs 20:27 “The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the innermost parts of his being.”

  • “God’s Communication with Us Does Not Originate in our
    • minds
    • and emotions,
      • but our Spirit
  • God Intended to Relate to Us Through our Spirit
    • the Spirit was the part of our Being God Intended to be Dominant—
      • In Charge
  • God Intended for Us to Be Spirit Led People

Galatians 5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

  • (a) it’s the crux of where humanity veered from God’s intended way and
  • (b) it’s the part of us that has become the problem.
  • We Assume the Spirit and the Soul are the Same Thing
    • They Are Not
  • Greek Word for Soul
    • mind( intellect)
      • “The mind (or intellect) reasons, thinks, forms logic, processes, and stores information.
    • emotions (feelings)
      • The emotions give us feelings, such as joy or sadness.
    • will (volition)
      • The will (or volition), based on what we’ve put into our mind and emotions, makes the decisions—the will determines our course of action.
  • Our Soul is the Mainframe or CPU
    • Translator
      • It’s Function is not to
        • Control
        • or Lead
          • But to Serve Our Spirit
          • Our Spirit was to Receive from Him and Pass On the Information to the Soul
            • “The soul could also receive and store information received through our body, through the five senses. Summary: Adam’s soul could receive and process information from two sources: directly from the natural, physical, visible world around him; and from the spiritual, invisible realm, but only via the spirit.”  Dutch Sheets. “Becoming Who You Are.”
  • For Us to be Spirit Led People
    • Our Spirit and Soul MUST Operate in this Chain of Command
      • ex. Thinking So Clearly During a Worship Set vs. Chaos of Daily Life
        • Spirit Steering the Ship of Our Life

What About Our Heart?

“The spiritual heart is probably that unique inter-working of the soul and the spirit.” Dutch Sheets. “Becoming Who You Are.”

  • The Body was Made to Relate to the Natural World Around Us
    • As Long as Our Soul is Controlled by our Spirit, All is Well
      • And the Body, through the Soul, Serves the Spirit

God’s Logic

  • In the NT, “The Word of God” can be translated “The Logic of God”
    • This is Why we Look to the Word of God for Answers for Our Lives
  • The scholar Zodhiates defines LOGOS (or the Word of God) as
    • “God’s reason or intelligence expressed in human speech”
  • God’s Word or Logic is Good for the Educated and the UnEducated as Well
    • “Anyone who is honestly trying to be a Christian will soon find his intelligence being sharpened: one of the reasons why it takes no special education to be a Christian is that Christianity is an education itself. That is why an uneducated believer like Bunyan was able to write a book [The Pilgrim’s Progress] that has astonished the whole world.” CS Lewis

Man’s Logic

  • Humanism
    • God is the Author of All Truth
    • Humanism Denies the Existence of God by Placing Man at the Center of Belief
      • To Have True Freedom, as the Created, We Must Keep Our Focus on the Creator
      • This is Why We Must Always Look to The Word (or Logic) of God to Define Truth
        • We Can Not Look to Man
        • Modern Culture
        • Shifting Values
        • New Laws
          • As Time Passes, the Only Absolute Truth is God’s Standard, His Word, or
            • His Intelligence Expressed in Human Speech

No Truth, No Freedom

John 8:32 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
