Faith and Family - Marriage

Faith + Family - Marriage

Biblical World View of Priorities
Matthew 22:37 You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your  mind.
Matthew 19:5 'This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.'
Ephesians 6 - Children and Obedience
Extended Family
Hebrews 10:25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do,  but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

Marriage/Family is the Oldest Institution on Earth

Marriage/Family is the Foundation to Strong Churches
Strong Churches make a Strong Nation

Ephesians 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Submitting: "to be under in rank."

We are obligated to respect those in higher rank.

Hebrews 13:17 Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.

"Let no man be so tenacious of his own will or his opinion in matters indifferent, …in all such matters give way to each other, and let love rule." (Clarke)

Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.

Submitted does NOT mean Inferior.
Submitted does NOT mean Silent

SUB (serving) - MISSION
There is a mission for the Christian marriage
Obeying and Glorifying God.

Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

Submission has NOTHING to with
Submission is God Appointed Order
Submission Has an Order

Jesus is EQUAL to the Father but Submits to His Position
Phillipians 2:5-11 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges ;he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. 9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

John 5:19 I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
Holy Spirit is also EQUAL to the Father and Son but submits

John 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.

Ephesians 5:24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Biblical Submission in Marriage Has Limits

When the husband asks the wife to sin, she is free from her obligation to submit.
When the husband is medically incapacitated, or legally insane, she is free from her obligation to submit.
When the husband is physically abusive, and endangers the safety of the wife or children, the wife is free from her obligation to submit.
When the husband breaks the marriage bond by adultery.

As to the Lord means …
- A wife's submission to her husband is part of her Christian life.
- When a wife doesn't obey this word to submit to your own husband as to the Lord, she isn't only falling short as a wife. She is falling short as a follower of Jesus Christ.
- This is completely out of the realm of "my nature" or "my personality."
This is a different way to live, setting us apart from our culture.

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,
27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

the GREATER Challenge is to Husbands
Love LIKE Christ Loves
The Command to LOVE Safeguards Husbands being Tyrants Over Their Wives

28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—
30 for we are members of his body.

LOVE - Agape - the highest form of love, a universal, unconditional love that transcends, that serves regardless of circumstances.

31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church
33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
