Christology III

John 12:12-19  The next day, the news that Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem swept through the city. A large crowd of Passover visitors

13 took palm branches and went down the road to meet him. They shouted,

“Praise God!

Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Hail to the King of Israel!”

14 Jesus found a young donkey and rode on it, fulfilling the prophecy that said:

15 “Don’t be afraid, people of Jerusalem.

Look, your King is coming,

    riding on a donkey’s colt.”

16 His disciples didn’t understand at the time that this was a fulfillment of prophecy. But after Jesus entered into his glory, they remembered what had happened and realized that these things had been written about him. ( Zech 9:9 - Heart of Christology - Jesus is the Central Focus of the Bible )

17 Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it.

18 That was the reason so many went out to meet him—because they had heard about this miraculous sign. (Word should be out if Christ is Your Center - People Should Be Talking)

19 Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!”

Palm Branches typically used at Feast of Tabernacles (Season of Rejoicing), not             Passover

Intertestamental Period (400 years) - Palm branches used after (Mattathias, Judas Maccabaeus and Simon Maccabaeus) 160 BC cleansed the tabernacle of idol worship during Seleucid occupation

new celebration - feast of lights (Hanukah)

We often let our Expectations Dictate our Expressions of Worship

        Hallel - Psalm 113-118 (85 verses)

Psalm 118:25 Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success!                                                                        26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Triumphal Entry

John 18:36 Jesus answered, "My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”

Christ Always Enters the Scene as the Answer to our Deepest Need (even if we don’t know through natural understanding what that is)

Isaiah 55:8-9 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.  “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.                                                                                          9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

When Jesus Has a Plan…

John 12:19 Then the Pharisees said to each other, “There’s nothing we can do. Look, everyone has gone after him!”

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
